Demystifying the Czech Integration Course for Students
So, you’ve just received your residence permit in the Czech Republic. Congrats!
Now comes the less exciting part: paperwork, rules… and possibly the Czech Integration Course.
Don’t worry — it’s not an exam, it’s not in Czech only, and it’s definitely survivable. Let’s break it down clearly and simply.
What Is the Czech Integration Course?
The Czech Integration Course is a mandatory information course for many foreigners living in the Czech Republic. Its goal is simple- help you understand how life here actually works — your rights, responsibilities, and where to get help.
Think of it as a “how not to mess up your life in CZ” starter guide.
Who Has to Take the Course?
If you received your residence permit on or after January 1, 2021, you most likely must complete the course — unless you fall under one of the exemptions below.
If you’re unsure, keep reading. Many students are actually exempt.
Who Does NOT Have to Take the Course? (Good News Section)
You do not need to attend the Czech Integration Course if you are:
- An EU citizen or a family member of an EU citizen with temporary residence
- Staying in the Czech Republic on a long-term visa only
- A holder of temporary protection (for example, displaced persons)
- A holder of international protection (asylum or subsidiary protection)
- A foreigner with long-term residence for:
- study
- investment
- employee cards or blue cards issued under government programs for highly skilled or key personnel
- Under 15 years old or over 61 years old
Important for students:
If you have long-term residence for Study not Other, you are exempt. No course required.
If you don’t fall into any of these categories, then yes — the course is mandatory.
What to Expect
If you do need to attend, here’s what it looks like:
- Duration: 4 hours (one afternoon, not a semester)
- Format: In person
- Location: Prague (and some regional cities)
- Price: 1,500 CZK (paid by you)
- Language: Offered in several languages, not just Czech
During the course, you’ll learn practical things like:

- Employment rights
- Social security
- Integration and support services
No exams. No grades. Just information.
Don’t Ignore This Part
If the course is mandatory for you, you must complete it within 1 year of collecting your residence permit.
Miss the deadline and you could face:
- A fine of up to 10,000 CZK
Yes — they do check.
Why the Course Is Actually Useful
Beyond being a legal requirement, the course can save you time, money, and stress later. It explains things most people only learn after making expensive mistakes.
Knowing how the system works in the Czech Republic is always better than guessing.
Still Not Sure If You Need to Attend?
If you’re unsure whether the course applies to you, there’s an official quiz you can take online. It will tell you clearly whether the course is mandatory in your case.
You can find it on the official Adaptation and Integration Courses website here
