What Is Czech Nostrification? (And Why It Won’t Stall Your Dreams)
You’ve aced your exams, received your university acceptance letter, and started dreaming about life in Prague. But just as you begin packing your bags, a new word pops up in your admissions checklist: Nostrification.
It sounds like a complicated administrative hurdle, but it is actually a vital academic step for non-EU students moving to the Czech Republic.
The great news is that Czech high school Nostrification doesn’t have to stall your dream. Many international students think they cannot start university without it, but that is a common misconception. You can safely begin your university journey by enrolling in an unaccredited program format under a Visa Type “Other”, giving you plenty of time to finalize your paperwork locally and smoothly switch your purpose of stay later.
Here is everything you need to know to successfully navigate Czech nostrification at your own pace.

What Exactly Is Nostrification?
Nostrification (nostrifikace) is the official, state-administered process of proving that your foreign education is completely equal in content, hours, and scope to a degree or diploma earned in the Czech Republic.
Czech law dictates that to formally graduate from an accredited local university program, you must legally prove you have completed the previous tier of education:
- To study a Bachelor’s degree, you must nostrify your High School Diploma.
- To study a Master’s degree, you must nostrify your Bachelor’s Diploma.
Type 1: High School Nostrification (For Bachelor’s Applicants)
If you are coming to the Czech Republic straight out of high school, your documents are usually processed by the Department of Education at the regional City Hall (Magistrát).
The Required Documents:
- A certified copy of your High School Graduation Certificate.
- An official transcript displaying all subjects and the exact number of teaching hours completed over your final 3 to 4 years.
- An administrative fee of 3,000 CZK (Note: This was recently increased by Czech authorities from the old 1,000 CZK rate, so make sure to budget for the new amount!).
The Nostrification Exams
Because secondary school systems vary globally, the City Hall will compare your total high school hours to the Czech curriculum. If your home country’s school has fewer hours in specific subjects, the authorities will assign you 1 to 5 nostrification exams.
These are in-person oral exams conducted at a designated local high school. They are held in Czech, but you are legally permitted to bring a certified court translator to interpret for you.
Crucial Exception for IB Students: The Czech Higher Education Act officially recognizes the International Baccalaureate (IB) diploma as a direct equivalent to the Czech school-leaving exam (maturita). If you hold an official IB diploma, you are completely exempt from standard City Hall nostrification and exams!
Type 2: University Recognition (For Master’s & PhD Applicants)
If you have already earned a higher education degree abroad and want to pursue a graduate program in Prague, the process skips the City Hall completely. Instead, it is called the “Recognition of Foreign Higher Education”.
How it works:
- You find a public Czech university that offers a program highly similar to the degree you already graduated from (e.g., if you have a BSc in Business, you contact an institution like VŠE).
- You submit a certified copy of your University Diploma and your complete Diploma Supplement / Transcript of Records.
- You pay an administrative fee of 3,000 CZK.
The university’s rectorate evaluates the academic credits and course descriptions. The best part? University degree recognition never involves taking any exams. It is a purely paper-based evaluation that takes roughly 30 to 60 days.
The Golden Rule of Local Document Preparation
While the legal verification of your documents must be done in your home country before you leave, you still need to prepare your folders to meet strict Czech standards once you handle the logistics:
Certified Translations
Every single document not natively written in Czech or English must be officially translated into the Czech language. To ensure validity, this translation must be executed by a certified court interpreter registered directly with the Czech Ministry of Justice.
FAQ: What if I don’t have my Nostrification or an apartment yet?
This is an incredibly common dilemma. How can you complete a complex academic evaluation if you are still living in your home country waiting to apply for your visa?
Fortunately, the system has built-in workarounds that completely remove the time pressure:
- For Master’s & PhD Applicants: Your physical address does not affect the evaluation process. Because you apply directly to a specific university rectorate rather than a regional city hall, you can safely submit your university recognition files from your home country using your current home address.
- The “Visa Type Other” Strategy (Zero Time Pressure): Most of our student clients decide to opt for a Visa Type “Other” (Jiný účel). This allows you to enroll in your chosen university’s unaccredited preparatory or foundation tracts and physically start your classes on campus right away. You face absolutely zero time pressure. You can spend your upcoming year settling into Prague, attending lectures, taking your time with any high school exams, and finalizing your nostrification locally. Once it is fully approved during the academic year, you can smoothly change your official purpose of stay to “Study” directly inside Prague.
