Don’t Forget to Change Your Purpose of ‘Other’ to ‘Studium

Many international students arrive in the Czech Republic with a residence permit or visa issued for “Other” reasons — such as language preparation, or uncredited university program. Later, after working hard to pass nostrification and finally getting accepted into an accredited study program, they assume their new student status is automatically registered.

But here’s the important part many students don’t know:
Your purpose of stay does NOT change automatically — even after nostrification, acceptance, or enrollment.

If your permit still shows “Other” while you are now studying in an accredited program, you MUST apply to change your purpose of stay to “Studium.”
Otherwise, you could face big complications later, especially when applying for extensions.

Why You Must Change Your Purpose of Stay After Nostrification

When you move from general activities (“Other”) to formal studies at an accredited Czech university, your legal purpose of stay must match your new activity.

The Ministry of the Interior (MVČR) requires this because your purpose of stay determines:

  • which residence permit type you can apply for
  • what documents you must provide
  • your health insurance obligations
  • your work rights as a student
  • and how your extension will be assessed

If you don’t update your purpose to Studium, the Ministry may see a mismatch between the records and your actual activity.

Common Student Scenario

Here is the situation many students experience:

  1. You enter the Czech Republic with a visa for “Other.”
  2. You start your nostrification process.
  3. After passing nostrification, you are accepted into an accredited university program.
  4. You enroll and become a full student.
  5. But your residence permit in the system still says “Other.”

If you skip the purpose change, your next extension may be questioned because the Ministry still thinks you’re here for something else, not for university studies.

When Should You Apply to Change the Purpose of Stay?

As soon as you receive:

  • your nostrification certificate
  • your acceptance confirmation (Potvrzení o přijetí ke studiu)

What Documents You Need for the Change

Although requirements vary slightly, students generally need:

  3. Proof of financial means
  4. Proof of accommodation
  5. Current residence permit/visa
  6. Application for change of purpose of stay

The Ministry may additionally ask for certain documents depending on your case.

What Happens If You Don’t Change the Purpose?

Students who skip this step often face:

  • delays in their student residence extension
  • requests for additional evidence
  • confusion about their current purpose
  • potential complications with insurance or work rights
  • risk that their application is not accepted under the correct category

How to Apply for the Change

You must submit the application in person at your local MVČR (OAMP) office.

Steps:

  1. Prepare the required documents.
  2. Book an appointment.
  3. Submit your application for change of purpose (změna účelu pobytu).
  4. Wait for the Ministry to process the update.
  5. Once the purpose is changed to Studium, future student extensions will be smooth and consistent.

Final Advice for Students

Doing this early ensures:

✨ Your extension is processed without problems
✨ You enjoy full student rights
✨ You avoid stressful immigration misunderstandings

Studying in the Czech Republic is an amazing opportunity — just make sure your legal documents reflect your new path.
