Czech Digital Nomad Visa: The Simple Fast-Track Guide

What Is the Czech Digital Nomad Program?

If you work in tech or digital marketing and want to live and work remotely anywhere in the Czech Republic, the government offers an official fast-track option: the Digital Nomad Program (Program Digitální nomád).

Many blogs call it a simple, open-to-everyone visa. In reality, it is a government-backed fast track managed by the Ministry of Industry and Trade (MPO).
If you qualify, this program lets you skip long embassy waiting queues and shortens the visa decision window to just 45 days.

Here is a straightforward guide explaining how the program works, who qualifies, and an exact checklist of documents so you don’t waste time or money on unnecessary translations.

1. How Does the Program Work?

A normal Czech Long-Term Visa (Type D) takes 3 to 4 months to process, and getting an embassy appointment can take even longer.

The Digital Nomad Program solves that:

  1. Ministry Review: You first send your files to the Ministry of Industry and Trade (MPO) by email.
  2. Priority Embassy Date: Once the Ministry approves you, the Czech embassy assigns you an expedited appointment date (usually within 10 business days).
  3. 45-Day Visa Decision: The immigration office (MVČR) must process your visa within 45 days.

You apply under one of two tracks:

  • Remote Employee: You work full-time for a company based outside the Czech Republic.
  • Freelancer: You work as an independent contractor using a Czech Trade License (živnostenský list).

2. Who Can Apply? (The 4 Basic Rules)

Before preparing your papers, make sure you meet all four criteria:

1. Citizenship (13 Countries Only)

You must hold a passport from one of these countries:

  • South & North America: United States, Canada, Mexico, Brazil
  • Europe & UK: United Kingdom
  • Asia-Pacific: Australia, New Zealand, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, Singapore, India*
  • Middle East: Israel

(*Note: Applicants applying through the Czech Embassy in New Delhi are subject to an annual government application quota.)

2. Job Sector

You must work in IT, Software, Telecommunications, or Digital Marketing.

  • Eligible roles: Software developers, systems engineers, cybersecurity specialists, product managers, DevOps, data analysts, SEO leads, and digital marketing managers.
  • Not eligible: General virtual assistants, lifestyle coaches, copywriters, or general online shop owners.

3. Education or Experience

You must prove your skills through:

  • A university degree in IT, science, or marketing, OR
  • At least 3 years of professional experience in IT or digital marketing (proven by previous contracts or signed reference letters).

4. Minimum Monthly Income

You must earn at least 1.5 times the Czech gross average salary.

  • Right now, this means a net monthly income of at least ~74,000 CZK (around $3,300 USD or €3,000 EUR).
  • You prove this with recent bank statements showing regular deposits.

3. Remote Employee vs. Freelancer: Which Route Fits You?

Route A: The Remote Employee Track

  • Visa category: Purpose “Other” (Ostatní)
  • How it works: You stay on payroll with your foreign employer and work online from Czechia.
  • The 50-Employee Rule: Your employer must have at least 50 employees worldwide. Small startups with fewer than 50 people will be rejected.
  • Employer Form: Your company’s HR or director must sign an official Czech form confirming that you are allowed to work remotely from the Czech Republic.
  • Embassy Interview: Usually not required for employees.

Route B: The Freelancer Track

  • Visa category: Purpose “Business” (Podnikání)
  • How it works: You work for your own clients and set up a Czech Trade License (živnostenský list / OSVČ).
  • Company size: Does not apply—you work for yourself.
  • Mandatory Interview: You must attend an in-person interview at the embassy. The officer will ask about your business plan, your clients, your pricing, and why you want to move to the Czech Republic.

4. Can Your Family Join You?

Yes. Your legal spouse, registered partner, and dependent children can move with you.

  • Passport Rule: Unlike you, your family members do not need to be from the 13 eligible countries. An American or British nomad can bring a spouse of any nationality.
  • Application Timing: You must include your family members in your initial Ministry (MPO) application at the exact same time you apply.
  • Required Documents: Official marriage and birth certificates with an Apostille and a certified Czech court translation.

5. The Application Process

  1. Submit to the Ministry (MPO): Email your application form, CV, degree/experience proof, contracts, and bank statements as PDFs to digitalnomad@mpo.gov.cz. The Ministry reviews everything in 5 to 10 business days.
  2. Book the Embassy: The embassy will email you an appointment date. You are allowed only one rescheduling for a serious, documented emergency (like illness). If you miss it, you lose your spot in the program.
  3. Submit at the Embassy: You attend your appointment in person with your physical documents. The Ministry of the Interior makes a decision within 45 days.
  4. Collect Visa & Travel: Once approved, buy comprehensive health insurance, get your visa sticker, and travel to Czechia.

6. Document Checklist & Important Clarifications

Submitting the wrong format or translating documents you don’t need can cost hundreds of euros. Keep these rules in mind:

Do Bank Documents Need to Be Translated?

  • Monthly Bank Statements: No. Czech embassies accept original bank statements in English without a translation.
  • 1-Page Bank Letter: Yes. If you prefer not to submit a long statement and use a 1-page bank balance letter instead, you must get that letter translated into Czech by a certified court translator. Translating 1 page is fast and very affordable.
  • Payment Card: In all cases, you must show an international debit or credit card issued in your name that is linked to your account.

Bank Documents: Ministry Stage vs. Embassy Stage

    • US Citizens: You do not need an FBI check. You sign a simple Affidavit of Clean Criminal Record (Čestné prohlášení) at the consulate. (Exception: If you lived in another country for more than 6 months in the last 3 years, you need a police check from that specific country).
    • UK Citizens: ACRO certificate with an Apostille and certified Czech translation.
    • Canadians, Australians, etc.: National police clearance (RCMP, AFP) with an Apostille and certified Czech translation.
  • Freelancers only: Preliminary Czech Trade License (Živnostenský list) certificate.

7. What Happens After Year One?

The Digital Nomad Visa is granted for 1 year. It cannot be renewed as a simple visa sticker while in the country.

To stay longer, you switch to a Long-Term Residence Permit (dlouhodobý pobyt):

  • When to apply: In person at the immigration office (OAMP) in Czechia between 120 days and 1 day before your visa expires.
  • Employees: You must first email the Ministry (digitalnomad@mpo.gov.cz) to extend your program inclusion for Year 2 before submitting your residence permit paperwork to OAMP.
  • Freelancers: You apply directly with OAMP by showing your active trade license, tax records, and social security payments.
  • Mandatory 4-Hour Course: Once you receive a Long-Term Residence Permit, you must attend a 4-hour Adaptation-Integration Course within your first year, or face a fine of up to 10,000 CZK.

8. Essential Tax Notes

  • The 183-Day Rule: If you stay in the Czech Republic for 183 days or more in a calendar year, you become a Czech tax resident. This means you must report your worldwide income here, based on double-tax treaties between Czechia and your home country.
  • Freelancers & The Lump-Sum Tax (Paušální daň): Freelancers with a trade license can often sign up for a single monthly payment system. One fixed monthly payment covers your income tax, social security, and state health insurance all at once—with no complex tax return at the end of the year.
  • Employees: Having an employee work remotely in another country can create tax responsibilities for both you and your company. It is always best to consult a local tax advisor during your first few months.

Frequently Asked Questions

Czech Digital Nomad Visa: Key Details & Answers

Straightforward answers to the most common questions about the 45-day fast-track program.

Program Basics

Does the Czech Republic have an official digital nomad visa?

The Czech Republic does not issue a generic digital nomad visa sticker. Instead, it offers an official fast-track scheme called the Digital Nomad Program (Program Digitální nomád).

If approved by the Ministry of Industry and Trade (MPO), eligible IT and digital marketing specialists receive priority embassy appointments and an accelerated 45-day visa decision for either a remote employee visa (purpose “Other”) or a freelancer visa (purpose “Business”).

Eligibility

Which nationalities are eligible for the Czech Digital Nomad Program?

Citizens of 13 countries are eligible: United States, Canada, Mexico, Brazil, United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, Singapore, Israel, and India.

Note for Indian applicants: Applications submitted via the Czech Embassy in New Delhi are subject to an annual quota of 24 freelancer and 24 employee applications.

Income Floor

What is the minimum income requirement?

Applicants must prove a regular monthly net income equal to at least 1.5 times the Czech average gross wage.

Currently, this threshold is approximately 74,000 CZK per month (~$3,300 USD / ~€3,000 EUR). This is verified through consecutive monthly bank statements showing steady deposits over the last 3 to 6 months.

Visa Routes

What is the difference between the employee and freelancer tracks?

Remote Employees (Purpose “Other”): You remain employed by a company outside the Czech Republic with at least 50 staff worldwide that officially signs the MPO remote work declaration.

Freelancers (Purpose “Business”): You operate as an independent contractor under a Czech Trade License (živnostenský list / OSVČ) and must pass a mandatory in-person business interview at the Czech embassy.

Translations

Do bank statements need to be translated into Czech?

Original bank statements in English do not require translation. Czech embassies accept standard English monthly bank statements as-is.

However, if you choose to submit an official 1-page bank balance confirmation letter instead, that narrative letter must have a certified Czech court translation. In all cases, you must present an active bank payment card issued in your name.

Criminal History

Do US citizens need an FBI background check?

No. US citizens can sign an Affidavit of Clean Criminal Record (Čestné prohlášení o bezúhonnosti) directly at the Czech embassy instead of submitting an apostilled FBI report.

An official foreign police certificate with an Apostille is only required if the American applicant resided continuously in a third country for more than 6 months in the last 3 years.

Relocating With Family

Can I bring my family members or spouse?

Yes. Spouses, registered partners, and dependent children under 26 can accompany you.

Family members do not need to hold a passport from the 13 eligible countries, but their inclusion application must be filed with the MPO simultaneously with your application.
