1. The Czech Public School System: Primary & High School

Primary Schools (Základní škola – ZŠ)
In the Czech Republic, primary school is a single continuous block that covers ages 6 to 15 (Grades 1 through 9).
- The Catchment Rule (Spádová škola): This is the single most important rule to know! Public schools are strictly bound by geography. By law, the public school in your specific municipal district must prioritize giving your child a spot if you have registered permanent residency there. If you have your heart set on a specific public school, you must rent a flat within its strict catchment boundary.
- The Language: The curriculum is entirely in Czech. However, many Prague public schools are highly experienced with foreign children and offer subsidized Czech-as-a-second-language (ČJ pro cizince) integration classes to help them catch up.
- The “Zápisy” (Enrollment Days): Official registration for primary schools happens strictly in April for the following September. It is a highly bureaucratic, Czech-only process that requires careful preparation of your residency and identity documents.
High Schools (Střední škola / Gymnázium)
Around age 15, students transition to high school for another 4 years.
- For academically minded students aiming for university, the ultimate goal is usually a Gymnázium. These are prestigious, rigorous high schools that conclude with the Maturita exam (the national graduation diploma required for university).
- Prague features several public Gymnáziums with excellent reputations, some even offering bilingual sections. However, admission is highly competitive and requires passing standardized national entrance exams (Cermat) in math and Czech.
2. The Private & International School Scene
If your kids are older, if you are only in Prague for a few years, or if you want them to continue in a familiar global curriculum (like the British National Curriculum or the International Baccalaureate), private international schools are the go-to choice.
